In this design the client wanted an open area where petanque could be played - but it also had to be private. This was achieved by planting appropriate trees and shrubs to the north to keep prying eyes to the minimum. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs were chosen for the woodland to give interest all year long.
The exisitng garden had a well constructed concrete foundation where at one time a greenhouse stood. To save on the cost of removing the foundation, a sturdy pergola was built around it (bottom right).
A large storage shed is situated on a new paved area (top left) and beside the shed is a bench for quiet contemplation. The bench has fragrant smelling plants in containers on each side.
Why not treat wood that isn't in contact with the soil with a product that allows the wood to breathe while still repelling water? Linseed oil is such a product.
